But "conductor bar" is not one product — it's a category that spans several major brand families, each built around distinct series or configurations with different amperage ranges, enclosure designs, and duty ratings.

What Is Conductor Bar?
Conductor bar — also called conductor rail or runway conductor — is an insulated power rail mounted along a crane runway or bridge that supplies continuous electrical power to a moving crane, hoist, or monorail. A spring-loaded collector, mounted to the moving equipment, slides along the bar and transfers power as the equipment travels the length of the runway.
Most conductor bar systems consist of multiple parallel conductors mounted along the crane runway. Depending on the electrical requirements, installations commonly use three, four, or five conductors — for example, three phase conductors plus a dedicated ground conductor, with additional poles used where required for control circuits or other application-specific functions. The conductors are supported at regular intervals by hanger assemblies, with expansion joints installed on longer runways to accommodate thermal movement and end caps used to protect exposed terminations. Each conductor is enclosed within an insulated housing that helps prevent accidental contact with energized components, providing an important safety advantage over traditional bare trolley wire systems.

SAF-T-BAR is an insulated conductor bar system for overhead crane, hoist, monorail, and conveyor electrification, available in Series C, T, J and H configurations spanning 65A to 1,500A. Series H is the high-amperage, heavy-duty option, engineered for high-tonnage bridge cranes, ladle cranes, and coil handling systems in steel mills, foundries, and heavy fabrication plants. It is typically specified where higher current requirements, demanding duty cycles, and severe operating environments exceed the practical range of lower-capacity conductor bar systems.
Insul-8: Five Current Systems Plus a Legacy Line

Safe-Lec 2 is the quick-install system — 14'9" bar lengths (versus 10' for most other systems), bolted splice joints instead of pinned ones, and multi-pole hangers that snap multiple bars into a single mount. 8-Bar is the original figure-8 conductor bar design — Insul-8 pioneered the profile over 60 years ago. It spans 40A to 350A and can be curved to an 18" minimum radius, making it a go-to for tightly curved systems and specialty applications where other profiles can't bend tight enough.

Side Contact 8-Bar is a lateral-entry variation of the 8-Bar system for installations where standard bottom-entry mounting doesn't fit, or where conductors need to be spaced more closely than standard 8-Bar allows. It covers the same 40A–350A range as standard 8-Bar in a side-entry collector configuration.
Hevi-Bar II is the heavy-duty option, delivering 500A through 1,500A for high-tonnage bridge cranes, ladle cranes, coil and slab handling systems, and press room cranes in steel mills, foundries, and forge shops. It's also available in a Dura-coat finish — a factory-applied protective coating for corrosion resistance in chemical processing, coastal, and wastewater treatment environments, a combination of high amperage and corrosion protection that's uncommon at this current capacity.

Standard Figure Eight is the base configuration, available in five amperage classes — 110A rolled galvanized steel, 160A rolled stainless steel/copper laminate, 250A rolled copper/steel laminate, 350A rolled electrolytic copper, and 500A extruded electrolytic copper — covering light monorail hoists through heavy bridge crane runways from a single conductor profile. Covers are available in indoor (orange PVC), outdoor (gray UV-stable PVC), and high-temperature (yellow Lexan, rated to 280°F) variants.
Heated Figure Eight adds a heater wire system to the standard bar, recommended for outdoor yard cranes and indoor frozen food storage where frost and ice buildup would otherwise interfere with collector contact.

Choosing Between Them
A few starting questions narrow the field quickly:
1. What's the amperage requirement? Series T, Cluster Bar, and the Wampfler SingleFlexLine/MultiLine series cover the lower end. Series C, Safe-Lec 2, 8-Bar, Duct-O-Bar Figure Eight, and the Wampfler SinglePowerLine series cover the broad middle. Series J sits just above that, at 400A–500A, bridging into Series H and Hevi-Bar II's 500A-and-up heavy industrial tier.
2. How tight are the curves? 8-Bar's 18" minimum radius and Cluster Bar's 18" radius are among the tightest available; Safe-Lec 2 curves to a 60" minimum radius.
3. Is bottom-entry mounting available, or does the collector need to enter from the side? Side Contact 8-Bar, Duct-O-Bar's Side Contact Figure Eight, and the M-Head Wampfler collector configurations all address space-constrained lateral entry.
4. Does the installation face frost, ice, or airborne contaminants? Duct-O-Bar's Heated Figure Eight is built specifically for outdoor yard cranes and cold storage; its Totally Enclosed Figure Eight addresses dusty or particulate-heavy environments.
5. Is the environment corrosive? Hevi-Bar II's Dura-coat option is a differentiator for chemical, coastal, and wastewater environments at high amperage.
6. Is this a new installation or a replacement on an existing runway? Matching the existing series — including confirming whether an installation is running legacy Hevi-Bar I — usually matters more than switching brands for a maintenance project.
Grounding and Compliance
OSHA 1910.179 distinguishes between two types of crane conductors: runway (or main) conductors installed along the crane or monorail runway, and bridge conductors that supply power to the trolley along the bridge structure. The grounding requirements that apply can differ between the two, and between insulated conductor bar systems and bare trolley wire — a distinction worth confirming during system design rather than after installation. NEC 610.61 sets out separate grounding and bonding requirements for crane and monorail hoist equipment, including provisions specific to systems using three-bar conductors.
